Whitening comes first for a reason. Composite resin will not lighten once it is bonded, so we whiten your natural teeth first and then match the resin to the shade you have settled on.

Is Composite Bonding Right for You?
Bonding is excellent at some things and the wrong tool for others. Here is the honest split.
It works well for
- Chipped or worn edges. Rebuilding a broken corner or levelling an uneven smile line.
- Small gaps. Closing spaces between the front teeth without moving them.
- Stains that whitening will not shift. Tetracycline banding and deep intrinsic marks that bleaching cannot reach.
- Slightly short or narrow teeth. Adding length and width to balance the smile.
- Minor rotations. Softening a tooth that sits slightly out of line.
It is not the right choice for
- Significant crowding or bite problems. Bonding covers misalignment rather than correcting it. Invisalign moves the teeth properly first, and many patients do bonding afterwards to finish the result.
- Heavy grinding. If you clench or grind, resin will chip. We will talk through a nightguard or a different option.
- Active decay or gum disease. These are treated first. Nothing cosmetic goes ahead until the foundation is healthy.
- Very heavy staining habits. If you drink a lot of red wine, coffee or smoke, bonding will discolour faster and veneers may serve you better.

How Long Composite Bonding Lasts
Most cases hold up well for around five to seven years. Some go longer, some need a touch up sooner. What makes the difference is mostly aftercare rather than luck.
What shortens it
- Grinding or clenching at night
- Biting nails, pens or opening things with your teeth
- Heavy coffee, tea, red wine and smoking
- Skipping hygiene appointments, which is when early chipping gets spotted
What we do about it
Your custom retainer is included in the package price, and wearing it protects the work while you sleep. Small chips can usually be repaired in the chair rather than redone from scratch. Regular hygiene appointments keep the margins clean and the surface polished.
One thing worth knowing upfront. Composite does not respond to whitening gel once it is bonded, so if you whiten your natural teeth later the bonded teeth will stay as they are. That is why whitening is built into the package and done first.
