How Does Bonding Work?
Composite bonding uses a specially formulated tooth-coloured resin – the same material used in high-quality white fillings – applied directly to the surface of your teeth. Unlike porcelain veneers, no enamel is removed and the process is completely reversible.
Your dentist works freehand, building up layers of resin to achieve the exact shape, length and colour you’re looking for. The resin is then hardened using a curing light, and polished to a natural-looking finish that’s virtually indistinguishable from your own teeth.
The treatment is suitable for chipped, cracked or uneven teeth, gaps, mild crowding, short or worn teeth, and surface staining that whitening alone cannot resolve. Most full-smile cases take between one and two hours.

Composite bonding is not recommended if you have significant overcrowding, active gum disease, or heavily decayed teeth – but these are things we can identify and address at your initial consultation.

How Long Does Composite Bonding Last?

Unlike porcelain veneers, composite bonding can be repaired or touched up if a chip occurs, rather than requiring full replacement. This makes it a lower-risk, lower-cost entry point into cosmetic dentistry – while delivering results that genuinely rival more expensive alternatives.
At your annual review, our dentists will assess the condition of your bonding and advise if any areas need attention. Most patients find their results remain excellent well beyond the five-year mark.

Both composite bonding and porcelain veneers can transform your smile, but they work differently and suit different patients. Here’s a straightforward comparison.
Composite bonding is applied directly to your natural tooth – no enamel removal, no drilling. It’s completed in a single visit, costs significantly less, and is fully reversible. The trade-off is longevity: composite typically lasts five to seven years versus ten to fifteen for porcelain.
Porcelain veneers require a thin layer of enamel to be removed before the veneers are bonded in place, making the process irreversible. They offer a more durable result and can correct more severe alignment or colour issues – but the commitment is greater, and so is the cost.
For patients who want to improve their smile without a permanent change, or who want to trial a new look before committing to veneers, composite bonding is often the ideal starting point.
