PURPOSE

Hygienists clean and polish teeth to remove plaque, tartar and stains. They also examine the teeth and gums, looking for signs of oral diseases such as gum diseases or cavities.

Tooth Fairy

EDUCATE

Hygienists educate patients on oral hygiene techniques, including brushing, flossing and maintaining a healthy diet.

During Your Hygienist Appointment

Oral Assessment

Our hygienist will start by assessing your oral health. They may ask about any dental concerns you have and examine your teeth, gums, and overall oral cavity.

Dental Cleaning

The primary purpose of the appointment is to clean your teeth and gums thoroughly. Our hygienist will use specialised tools to remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from your teeth. This process is called scaling.

Polishing

After scaling, your teeth will be polished to remove surface stains and make them smooth. This is often done using a gritty toothpaste-like substance and a high-speed brush.

Flossing

Our hygienist will floss between your teeth to ensure all debris and plaque are removed from hard-to-reach areas.

Education

Hygienists play a crucial role in patient education. They may provide advice on proper brushing and flossing techniques, as well as tips for maintaining good oral hygiene at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes bad breath?

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be caused by various factors. The most common reasons include poor oral hygiene, which allows bacteria to build up in the mouth, leading to foul-smelling odours. Additionally, certain foods, like garlic and onions, can contribute to bad breath, as can tobacco use and dry mouth. Medical conditions such as gum disease, respiratory infections, and digestive problems can also be culprits. To combat bad breath, maintain good oral hygiene, stay hydrated, and consider any underlying health issues.
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a chronic condition that affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It typically begins with gingivitis, characterised by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the gum tissue and bone that hold teeth in place deteriorate. Gum disease is primarily caused by the accumulation of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria on teeth. Smoking, poor nutrition, and certain medical conditions can also increase the risk. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene are essential to prevent and manage gum disease.
Dental hygiene procedures, such as teeth cleaning and scaling, are typically not painful. Dental hygienists are trained to perform these tasks with minimal discomfort to the patient. However, if you have sensitive teeth or gums, you may experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity during the procedure. In such cases, it’s essential to communicate with your hygienist, who can adjust their techniques or use desensitising agents to make you more comfortable.
The frequency of dental hygiene visits can vary depending on your individual oral health needs. In general, most people benefit from visiting the hygienist every three to six months for routine cleanings and check-ups. However, your dentist or hygienist may recommend more frequent visits if you have a history of gum disease, dental issues, or other oral health concerns. It’s essential to follow their guidance to maintain optimal oral hygiene.
Neglecting your dental hygiene can lead to a range of oral health problems. Without regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, plaque and tartar can build up on your teeth, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Over time, untreated gum disease can lead to tooth loss and even affect your overall health, as it has been linked to systemic conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Additionally, poor oral hygiene can result in persistent bad breath and aesthetic concerns. To avoid these issues, it’s crucial to maintain a consistent dental hygiene routine and visit your dentist regularly.

I really don’t enjoy seeing a hygienist… I’ve had one or two bad experiences in the past but honestly Leah was superb… the best I’ve seen. Really took time to put me at ease, was caring, thoughtful and a fantastic bed side manner. Really happy with the service.

Super professional establishment with friendly staff who make you feel welcome each time. I was having issues with my front teeth moving and crumbling and so went to Zen House Dental to see what can be done. I was not by any means expecting perfection, just something better than what I had, but perfection is exactly what I got. I had some veneers and implants done. Now I cannot stop smiling. Specifically, I cannot thank Dr.Eassun and his assistant Lauren enough for not only giving me a perfect smile but also oodles of confidence and also putting up with an occasional tantrum of mine. He stuck with me and made sure I was looked after and happy with the end result. I am not just happy but over the moon and highly recommend this dental practice, but specifically, Dr.Eassun.

I can’t recommend Dr Shivali highly enough. From the very beginning, she has been incredibly patient and always happy to go at my pace, which made such a difference to my confidence and comfort. She took the time to clearly explain all of my options, was very informative throughout, and never once pushed any treatment that she didn’t genuinely feel would benefit my teeth repair and improvement journey. My treatment started with a root canal, and from there all the way through to the end of my Invisalign treatment, Dr Shivali has been amazing. She’s not only highly skilled, but also so friendly and reassuring — she really puts you at ease and makes every appointment feel far less daunting. If I ever need any more dental work in the future (hopefully not!), I wouldn’t hesitate to return to Dr Shivali at Zen. She will always be my first choice. I also have to mention how welcoming the front reception team are — they’re always a pleasure to see and chat with, and they truly add to the positive experience every time I visit.

I’ve struggled to find a decent dentist near me for some time and I’m so pleased I have found Zen House. I had a hygienist appointment today by way of my own introduction to them and I couldn’t have been happier. The ‘house’ is beautiful, the receptionist warm and friendly and both the hygienist and nurse were so comforting, capable and made me feel at ease. They took the time to explain everything that was going on and how best to help me on my healthy teeth journey with great advice and tips. I feel very lucky to have found them and I look forward to my next appointment (who says that about a dentist?!)

Very happy with my composite bonding with Dr Ashkay. Great attention to detail ensuring my teeth look very natural. I had an old cap on my front tooth that was loose leaving only a small amount of tooth and he managed to match this with my other teeth using composite. Great result thank you!
