Now available at both our Banstead, Surrey and Battersea, London practices – trusted by hundreds of patients and backed by 500+ five-star Google reviews.

3 Steps

The Composite Bonding Process

How Does Bonding Work?

Composite bonding uses a specially formulated tooth-coloured resin – the same material used in high-quality white fillings – applied directly to the surface of your teeth. Unlike porcelain veneers, no enamel is removed and the process is completely reversible.

Your dentist works freehand, building up layers of resin to achieve the exact shape, length and colour you’re looking for. The resin is then hardened using a curing light, and polished to a natural-looking finish that’s virtually indistinguishable from your own teeth.

The treatment is suitable for chipped, cracked or uneven teeth, gaps, mild crowding, short or worn teeth, and surface staining that whitening alone cannot resolve. Most full-smile cases take between one and two hours.

Is Composite Bonding Right for Me?

Composite bonding is one of the most versatile cosmetic treatments available, suitable for a wide range of concerns including chipped or cracked teeth, gaps between teeth, uneven tooth length or shape, worn edges and mild surface staining.

Before any cosmetic treatment begins, we carry out a comprehensive dental examination to ensure you’re dentally healthy and composite bonding is the right solution for your goals. If another treatment would give you better long-term results, we’ll always say so.

Composite bonding is not recommended if you have significant overcrowding, active gum disease, or heavily decayed teeth – but these are things we can identify and address at your initial consultation.

If you’ve read concerns about composite bonding going wrong, it’s almost always a reflection of poor technique or low-quality materials. At Zen House Dental, every case is designed digitally first and carried out by an experienced cosmetic dentist – which is why our before and after results consistently exceed expectations.

How Long Does Composite Bonding Last?

With proper care, composite bonding typically lasts between five and seven years before a refresh is needed – and individual teeth can last significantly longer. The longevity of your results depends on a few simple factors: avoiding biting hard foods directly with bonded teeth, wearing your retainer overnight, and keeping up with your regular hygiene appointments.

Unlike porcelain veneers, composite bonding can be repaired or touched up if a chip occurs, rather than requiring full replacement. This makes it a lower-risk, lower-cost entry point into cosmetic dentistry – while delivering results that genuinely rival more expensive alternatives.

At your annual review, our dentists will assess the condition of your bonding and advise if any areas need attention. Most patients find their results remain excellent well beyond the five-year mark.

Composite Bonding vs Veneers - Which Is Right for You?

Both composite bonding and porcelain veneers can transform your smile, but they work differently and suit different patients. Here’s a straightforward comparison.

Composite bonding is applied directly to your natural tooth – no enamel removal, no drilling. It’s completed in a single visit, costs significantly less, and is fully reversible. The trade-off is longevity: composite typically lasts five to seven years versus ten to fifteen for porcelain.

Porcelain veneers require a thin layer of enamel to be removed before the veneers are bonded in place, making the process irreversible. They offer a more durable result and can correct more severe alignment or colour issues – but the commitment is greater, and so is the cost.

For patients who want to improve their smile without a permanent change, or who want to trial a new look before committing to veneers, composite bonding is often the ideal starting point. Many of our patients choose composite bonding first and later upgrade – and the results at both stages are genuinely impressive.

Not sure which is right for you? Our dentists are happy to talk through both options at a free smile consultation. You can also read more about our dental veneers and cosmetic dentistry options.

Frequently Asked Questions

If teeth are crooked, can composite bonding correct them?

If your teeth are crooked or misaligned, a tooth-coloured composite material may be used to reshape them and give the appearance that they are straight.
Composite bonding causes very little discomfort or disruption to daily life and is often performed without any anaesthetic. The combination of our highly trained staff and state-of-the-art equipment allows us to guarantee the highest standards of patient safety and comfort throughout every surgery.
Maintain a regular oral hygiene routine of twice-daily brushing and once-daily flossing. We recommend you schedule biannual checkups with our clinic for dental cleanings for a whiter and brighter smile in the long run.
To avoid damaging your teeth and gums, it is recommended that you switch to an electric toothbrush.
Dental bonding resin can become discoloured over time, exactly like natural enamel. More frequent use of coffee, tea, wine, and other staining drinks increases the likelihood that further dental bonding may be required at an earlier date. Steer clear of meals and drinks that might potentially leave a stain, such as those containing coffee, tea, colas, red wine, tomato sauce, berries, or curries.
